1970 Monte Carlo SS 454...FACTS...
The Monte Carlo was Chevrolet's version of the new G-body platform that was first seen in 1969 with the Pontiac Grand Prix. It was a stretched version of the A-platform that was used for the Chevelle intermediate, thus making most, if not all, mechanical components interchangeable with those for the Chevelle.
Exterior identification on the Monte carlo was limited to SS 454 rocker panel emblems behind the front wheelwells. All Super Sport Monte Carlos came with twin chrome exhaust pipe extentions.
Only one engine was available, the LS5 454 ci big block rated at 360 hp. It feature the small oval-port cylinder heads, cast iron intake manifold with a Quadrajet carburetor and a hydrulic battery were mandatory options with the 454.
A set of 15x7 wheels with G70x15 whitewall tires was standard. Heavy-duty front and rear springs and shocks along with front and rear stabilizer bars were also part of the Monte Carlo SS.
An interesting feature was the Superlift rear shocks absorbers with automatic level control. Working off engine vacuum was a small compressor that maintained rear ride height.
Cruise control was not available with the Monte Carlo SS.
Monte Carlos came with the new wire antenna imbedded in the windshield, rather than a conventional unit.
